It was down by the river, at springtime’s high-tide
When I tried to clear her absent mind
I spoke and I argued with a silver tongue
Unable to stop her from taking the plunge

Just like a swan her dress carried her through the waves
Until it was soaked and pulled her down below

And her maidens garland floats down to the stream

Crowned with a silvery whirlpool-crown she passed by

She was dancing through ripples 'til the last rays of light

And she was still dancing when she bathed in moonlight

A fisherman saw her with her face so grey

And cheering she waved her milky white hand

Two days later she arrived at the sea
Her golden hair now greenish with traces of tang
Her eyes have been taken by an eel from her face
Her body is swollen, white turned to blue
